High mortality rates in a juvenile free‐ranging marine predator and links to dive and forage ability ArchiMer
Cox, Samantha; Authier, Matthieu; Orgeret, Florian; Weimerskirch, Henri; Guinet, Christophe.
High juvenile mortality rates are typical of many long‐lived marine vertebrate predators. Insufficient development in dive and forage ability is considered a key driver of this. However, direct links to survival outcome are sparse, particularly in free‐ranging marine animals that may not return to land. In this study, we conduct exploratory investigations toward early mortality in juvenile southern elephant seals Mirounga leonina. Twenty postweaning pups were equipped with (a) a new‐generation satellite relay data tag, capable of remotely transmitting fine‐scale behavioral movements from accelerometers, and (b) a location transmitting only tag (so that mortality events could be distinguished from device failures). Individuals were followed during their...

Movement of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina L.) from Elephant Is. South Shetlands, Antarctica BABT
Muelbert,Mônica M. C.; Robaldo,Ricardo B.; Martínes,Pablo E.; Colares,Elton P.; Bianchini,Adalto; Setzer,Alberto.
In 1999, at-sea activity of two young southern elephant seal males (Mirounga leonina) from Elephant Is. (61º13'S, 55º23'W), Antarctica, was monitored and tracked for 9 months. The individuals were randomly selected, captured, sedated (Zoletil 50®- 1mg/kg), weighed, measured, bled, paint-marked and fitted with satellite tags (STDR - ST-6PPT, Telonics®, USA). Deployment of the STDR took about 45 min since each animal had a lower incisor tooth extracted for age determination. The seals exhibited individual behaviors. Seal "V"-23842 (BM ~ 801kg) moved from Elephant Is. (61.2ºS 55.3ºW) in Jan. 1999 to King George Is. (62.2ºS 58.1ºW) in Feb. 1999 when the tag stopped signaling. Seal "T"-23843 (BM ~ 656 kg) was restricted to the area around Elephant Is. (61.2ºS...

Ocorrência de Mirounga leonina Linnaeus (Pinnipedia, Phocidae) no extremo-sul do Brasil: agressão e patologias Zoologia
Drehmer,César Jaeger; Ferigolo,Jorge; Borsato,Eduardo Sérgio.
A male specimen of Mirounga leonina Linnaeus, 1758 age estimated betvveen 7-8 years old, collected at Santa Vitória do Palmar, Rio Grande do Sul State, soutiiernmost Brazil (32º44'S and 53º22'W) is presented. Ali the skeleton was recovered except the rostral region. It shows an advanced osteomyelitis in the lefl dentary, extending from the synfisis until the middle portion of the body; as well as Scheuermann disease at lumbar vertebrae. Such diseases could explain its presence at that locality, where rt was shot. The bullct was recovered from the rostrum, and might be responsible for death. This is the first vhlually complete skeleton of M. leonina recovered from Brazilian coast.

Southern elephant seals from Kerguelen Islands confronted by Antarctic Sea ice. Changes in movements and in diving behaviour ArchiMer
Bailleul, Frédéric; Charrassin, Jean-benoit; Ezraty, Robert; Ardhuin, Fanny; Mcmahon, Clive R.; Field, Iain C.; Guinet, Christophe.
The behaviour of southern elephant seals from Kerguelen Island (4950′S, 7030′E) was investigated in relation to the oceanographic regions of the Southern Ocean. The oceanographic and the seal behaviour data, including location and diving activity, were collected using a new generation of satellite-relayed devices measuring and transmitting pressure, temperature, and salinity along with locations. Dive duration, maximum diving depth, time spent at the bottom of the dives, and shape of dive profiles were compared between male and female seals, and were related to the oceanographic characteristics of areas prospected by the seals. Most animals travelled to the Antarctic shelf. However, during winter, adult females travelled away from the...
